What does a flashing blue light mean on a Worcester boiler?

A flashing blue light on your Worcester boiler is usually an indicator of an ignition, flame detection, or pressure issue. While this can be worrying, many of these faults can be diagnosed and, in some cases, resolved without the need for an engineer. However, some problems may require professional intervention.

Common causes of a Worcester boiler flashing blue light

1. Low water pressure

The boiler requires a specific pressure level to function properly. If the pressure drops too low, the system may fail to ignite, causing the blue light to flash.

Check: Inspect the pressure gauge on your boiler. The recommended range is usually between 1.0 and 1.5 bar.

Fix: If the pressure is too low, you can top it up using the filling loop. If you are unsure how to do this, consult your boiler’s manual or contact a professional.

2. Flue or condensate pipe blockages

A blocked flue or condensate pipe can prevent the boiler from venting properly, leading to a system fault, and your Worcester boiler having a flashing blue light.

Check: Look for visible obstructions in the flue, such as debris. If it’s a particularly cold period, the condensate pipe may have frozen.

Fix: If safe to do so, remove any blockages or thaw a frozen pipe using warm (not boiling) water.

3. Faulty ignition electrode

If the blue light is flashing slowly alongside a flashing reset button, this may indicate an issue with the ignition system.

Check: Listen for clicking noises when the boiler attempts to ignite.

Fix: A faulty ignition electrode will require replacement by a Gas Safe engineer.

4. Gas supply issues

A problem with the gas supply, such as a faulty gas valve or low gas pressure, can cause ignition failure.

Check: Ensure other gas appliances, like your hob, are working properly. If they are not, you may have a supply issue.

Fix: Contact your gas provider or a Gas Safe engineer to investigate further, our Ecotech Yorkshire experts can help you fix the issue.

5. Service mode activated

Sometimes, the boiler may have been left in service mode following a recent maintenance check or accidentally switched.

Check: Refer to your user manual to determine whether your boiler is in service mode.

Fix: Switch the boiler back to normal operating mode.
